Lubuskie University Oncology Center at the University Hospital in Zielona Góra 2025

The design team set themselves the goal of designing a building that would organize the surrounding space, acting as a “connector” both spatially and functionally.

The shape of the proposed hospital building stems directly from the shape of the intended development site, which is narrow, long, and nestled between existing buildings. The complex spatial layout makes ensuring good and clear communication around and within the proposed building, as well as with the C1 and Polyclinic buildings, to which it is functionally connected, a fundamental design challenge. To meet this design objective, the building was divided into two wings. A multi-story connecting passage was designed at the intersection of the wings, serving as the main vertical circulation core of the facility. Through its extensive glazing, its visual lowering relative to the utility wings, and the introduction of a utility terrace on its roof, the connecting passage serves as a dominant compositional element of the entire project, creating a functional and spatial keystone. A central atrium traversing all floors was located within the connecting passage to ensure a clear functional and spatial layout. The clarity of the functional layout was emphasized by the introduction of a spacious, lightweight substructure for the elevator shafts and a green wall installation connecting all levels of the building. These measures ensured excellent daylighting in the atrium area, including the underground level, around which the clinics and waiting rooms are primarily located. The use of natural lighting combined with the interior greenery creates the opportunity to design a welcoming and attractive space for employees and, above all, patients.
